What are the differences between layer-2 chains?

Layer-2 chains are built atop existing blockchains to enhance scalability and efficiency. They differ in terms of their underlying technology and use cases. Some common types include:

State Channels: Enable off-chain privacy based transactions between parties, reducing on-chain load. Used by: CKB
Sidechains: Separate chains that run parallel to the main chain, allowing for faster transactions. Used by RIF
Rollups: Bundle multiple transactions into a single one, improving throughput. Most popular models are Optimistic (used by Optimism) and ZK which is used by MATIC and IMX.
Plasma: Creates child chains to conduct transactions off the main chain.
