What is Streamr?
Streamr is a decentralized data broadcasting platform that hyperscales live data for various applications, including AI video streaming, and the secure Peer-to-Peer (P2P) distribution of Decentralized Public Infrastructure Network (DePIN). This cryptographically secure, open-source network enables real-time data streaming at scale. Streamr facilitates secure P2P distribution for AI, video streaming, and DePIN, ensuring the decentralized flow of live data.

- Data Monetization: Enabling the buying and selling of data stream subscriptions.
Start Your Streamr Journey
Whether you are a TilesNode runner, token holder, or builder, Streamr offers opportunities for everyone:
- TilesNode Runner: Run a Streamr node from your Mac or PC, secure the network, and earn yield on staked $DATA tokens.
- Token Holders: The $DATA token is the backbone of the Streamr network, driving adoption and liquidity.
- Builders: Utilize the Streamr SDK to build on data streams supporting your decentralized application (dApp) tech stack.
Streamr's Role in Web3
Streamr provides the real-time data infrastructure for the decentralized web (Web3). It operates as a core service layer, implementing a vendor-neutral, real-time publish/subscribe protocol for data transmission. The technology functions alongside companion blockchains, such as Ethereum, Gnosis, and Polygon, offering identity, security, and payment solutions.
The Streamr Network, a peer-to-peer system, enables decentralized messaging, making data transport scalable, secure, tamper-proof, and censorship-resistant. Acting as a building block for decentralized applications, it serves as message transport middleware, allowing parties to distribute or exchange information without reliance on a central server.
Streamr Network Exploration
The Streamr Network is dynamic, with nodes forming a topic-based publish-subscribe messaging system. The Network Explorer provides visibility into stream topologies, aiding node runners in inspection and issue diagnosis. Applications interact with Streamr nodes through the Streamr SDK or by running a separate node, depending on specific use cases and resource constraints.
DATA and XDATA Tokens
DATA
DATA, the native token of Streamr, serves a crucial utility within the platform's ecosystem. As the backbone of Streamr's decentralized network, DATA plays a pivotal role in incentivizing node operators globally. Its primary utility lies in facilitating secure, scalable, and real-time data streaming for various applications, such as AI, video streaming, and decentralized communication. DATA empowers users to buy and sell data stream subscriptions, contributing to the platform's data monetization features
XDATA
XDATA is the former name of Streamr's native token before undergoing a token migration. As part of Streamr's initiative to upgrade and modernize its token features based on community governance decisions (SIP-1), the original token, XDATA, has been renamed. The migration involves the coexistence of both XDATA and the new DATA token, with the latter symbolizing the upgraded version. This transition allows for increased token supply and aligns with Streamr's commitment to advancing its decentralized infrastructure and data economy, fostering a robust environment for Web 3.0 applications.
Team Background
Streamr Network AG, established in 2017 and based in Switzerland, is responsible for implementing the Streamr protocol. The open-source team is comprised of skilled programmers and developers spread across different time zones. Henri Pihkala, the founder and CEO, holds an MSc. in Computer Science and boasts a decade of freelance IT consulting, previously working at RIQ Yhtiöt Oy and Hedgehog Oy. Risto Karjalainen, COO, holds a Ph.D. in decision sciences and has a background as a quantitative analyst and portfolio manager.
Nikke Nylund, the co-founder and director of business development, is a serial entrepreneur with a successful track record in founding and growing companies. Michael Malka, the head of Streamr Labs, brings over 20 years of experience in the software industry, having held various roles from developer to CEO.
Project Development
In preparation for the Streamr 1.0 mainnet launch, Henri Pihkala, Streamr's founder, provided guidelines for Operators, dated March 1, 2024. The imminent release heralded decentralized incentives, urging Operators to ready themselves. The following steps were outlined:
- Update to RC Version: Operators were advised to update their nodes to the Release Candidate (RC) version, signifying a potential move to the official 1.0 mainnet release if no major issues arose.
- Migrate Operator Smart Contracts: Considering the introduction of a minimum delegation period as per SIP-20 governance, Operators were encouraged to migrate their smart contracts. This optional step involved recreating the contract for those created during the Testnets.
- Participate in Test Sponsorship: A low-paying test Sponsorship was initiated before the official launch. Operators, specifically those using RC version nodes, were invited to join, aiding in validating the system. Caution was advised due to potential bugs, suggesting a minimum stake to mitigate losses if unexpected issues occurred.
