What is Storj?
Storj takes a unique approach to data storage by harnessing unused storage space globally, eliminating the need for traditional data centers. By breaking down files into fragments and dispersing them worldwide, Storj enhances performance, security, and cost-effectiveness.
How it Works:
-
Encrypt: Objects undergo automatic AES-256-GCM encryption for robust security.
-
Split: Encrypted data is then fragmented into indistinguishable pieces.
-
Distribute: Individual pieces are distributed to diverse nodes across the globe.
-
Retrieve: A mere 29 pieces are required to reconstruct and download the original data.
Storj simplifies the complexities of decentralization, setting a new standard in security, performance, and pricing. Leveraging top-tier encryption on a decentralized network ensures that even Storj itself cannot access your encrypted data. With Storj, the era of data breaches and downtime is consigned to the past.

How Storj Works: Upload
For a glimpse into the distinctive nature of the Storj service, it's beneficial to understand the process involved in a round-trip upload and download of a file. The upload occurs through an Uplink client, either directly via the CLI or S3 compatible gateway, or indirectly through tools like FileZilla, Rclone, or Restic that have integrated the libuplink library.
Upload Process:
- Encryption: Upon upload, the Uplink client encrypts the file using a unique encryption key held by that client.
- Erasure Coding: The encrypted file undergoes erasure coding, breaking it into a minimum of 80 pieces, of which any 29 are sufficient to reconstruct the file. This redundancy is more efficient than traditional replication methods used by most storage systems, like DVDs.
- Satellite Interaction: The Uplink Client contacts the satellite to retrieve a list of Storage Nodes for piece storage. The satellite provides over 80 Storage Node addresses.
- Parallel Peer-to-Peer Upload: Pieces are uploaded in parallel directly to the Storage Nodes by the Uplink Client. Uploads cease once 80 pieces have been successfully uploaded to at least 80 Storage Nodes.
- Latency Elimination: To eliminate any long-tail effect and associated latency from slow Storage Nodes, the Uplink Client attempts a few more than 80 uploads during the process.
This unique approach sets Storj apart, ensuring secure and efficient file handling through encryption, erasure coding, and parallel, peer-to-peer uploads.
Storj: Download
When the Uplink Client initiates a file download, the process essentially mirrors that of an upload but in reverse. The Uplink Client sends a file request to the Satellite, and in response, the Satellite furnishes a roster of 35 Storage Nodes. From this list, the Uplink Client commences downloading pieces from all 35 Storage Nodes, ceasing the process once it has acquired the essential 29 pieces needed for file reconstruction, thus eliminating latency resulting from the long-tail effect. Subsequently, the pieces undergo re-encoding and are decrypted by the Uplink Client, which exclusively possesses the encryption key.
Storj Team Background
Established in 2014 by Shawn Wilkinson, Storj originated from the straightforward concept of leveraging untapped resources to enhance storage in terms of safety, speed, and affordability.
Key Team Members:
- Ben Golub (CEO): Providing leadership at the helm.
- Shawn Wilkinson (Founder & CSO): Serving as the founder and Chief Strategy Officer.
- JT Olio (Chief Architect): Playing a pivotal role as the Chief Architect.
Partnerships
Some of the main partners of Storj are: Filezilla, Pydio, Kafka, Minio, Comet, mongoDB, Fastly, Couchbase, HammerSpace, Zenko, NextCloud...
Project Development
In response to the swift changes in the digital landscape and regulatory frameworks, there is a growing demand for cloud storage that not only ensures robust security but also complies with stringent regulatory requirements. Recognizing this imperative, the Storj team is excited to introduce 'Storj Select' – a new feature enabling businesses to harness the advantages of our innovative cloud storage approach in terms of pricing, performance, security, and sustainability, while adhering to specific compliance mandates.
