What is Splinterlands?
Splinterlands is a digital, collectible card game inspired by classics like Magic the Gathering and Hearthstone, leveraging blockchain technology. Players build collections of cards with unique attributes and engage in skill-based battles against others. Here's what defines Splinterlands:
- True Ownership: Blockchain technology enables players to truly own and freely trade their digital assets, reinstating the sense of ownership lost in digital games.
- Scarcity and Transparency: Every card in Splinterlands boasts verifiable supply and historical records, ensuring transparency and true scarcity.
Players participate in battles by selecting ranked or practice matches, strategizing with a set of cards to outmaneuver opponents. While the game is free-to-play, unlocking the full game requires purchasing the summoner’s spellbook for $10, granting access to account keys and the ability to earn Dark Energy Crystals redeemable for real currency.

Splintershards (SPS) and DAO
Splintershards (SPS) is a governance token integrated into Splinterlands, empowering players, asset owners, and stakeholders with decision-making abilities. Governed by a Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO), token holders influence decisions via votes proportional to their staked SPS tokens. The DAO, managed by the SPS Foundation, holds funds for utilization based on token holder directives.
Token holders can propose and vote on fund allocation, determining actions such as providing liquidity, paying for services, funding third-party development, staking, or investing. These decisions dictate the direction of the ecosystem and potentially sustain it.
- Ranked Battles Staked SPS tokens enable players to earn rewards based on performance, with stakes placed on themselves or others. Rewards are calculated post-battle, considering factors like ladder rating and Energy Capture Rate (ECR).
- Liquidity Pools SPS tokens are tradable against various tokens on platforms like Ethereum, Binance Smart Chain, and Hive Engine, with LP Incentives rewarding liquidity providers based on provided liquidity.
- Land Expansion A significant evolution of Splinterlands, the land expansion introduces new gameplay elements, allowing landowners control over card minting for battles. As this expansion unfolds, it is anticipated to drive growth, retention, and value to the SPS token.
SPS Chain
SPS Chain operates via open-source software on the Hive blockchain, ensuring decentralized transaction validation. Governed by a Delegated Proof of Stake (DPoS) model, validators control transactions, and eventually, the SPS foundation funds.
VOUCHER Tokens
Transferrable reward tokens within the ecosystem, VOUCHER tokens offer discounts and promotions, earned through staking SPS or holding LICENSE tokens. These tokens are integral to various facets of the Splinterlands ecosystem, incentivizing engagement and participation.
Team Background
Jesse Reich and Matthew Rosen, known as "aggroed" and "yabapmatt" respectively on the Splinterlands Discord server, are the co-founders of the game. Both hail from the Pennsylvania area. Reich, a former scientist and chemistry professor, had no prior professional gaming experience before Splinterlands. On the other hand, Rosen has a background as a developer for gaming projects such as RockYou and Ryzing, although they were not blockchain-based.
Project Development
The Splinterlands team has proposed that the SPS DAO contracts Steem Monsters Corp. to organize a promotional event within the Splinterlands game to coincide with the upcoming Bitcoin halving. This event entails the creation of two limited-edition promo cards and various other prizes, with a requested payment of $200,000 payable in USDC or USDT tokens.
The event, spanning 30 days, will allow players to purchase the promo cards using DEC, DEC-B, or VOUCHER tokens, with one Legendary and one Rare promo card available. Each card's cost reflects the significance of the Bitcoin block reward after the halving. Tokens spent on purchasing the cards will be burned. Participants will earn points for each token burned, with chances to win prizes based on accumulated points. The prizes include PLOT tokens, packs, Essence Orb Packs, Azmare Dice Packs, Runi NFTs, and potentially Riftwatchers packs if a subsequent proposal is approved. The event will feature a point multiplier incentive, encouraging early participation and preventing last-minute leaderboard manipulation.
