What is Flow?

Flow is a blockchain network specifically designed to facilitate fast and affordable transactions. It serves as a direct competitor to Ethereum, another blockchain platform that offers its own digital currency and an ecosystem for various blockchain-based projects. Flow blockchain was developed by Dapper Labs, the same team behind CryptoKitties.

The launch of the Flow blockchain coincided with the introduction of NBA Top Shot, a blockchain-powered marketplace for digital collectibles specializing in basketball cards. Initially, Flow was built as a tool to fulfill the requirements of Dapper Labs' own game developers. However, it was later made available to the public to support other decentralized applications as well.

What Does the FLOW Token Do?

The FLOW token (referred to as "FLOW") serves as the native currency of the Flow network, playing a pivotal role in creating a new, inclusive, and borderless digital economy. Acting as the fuel for the network, FLOW powers the entire infrastructure of Flow. It is essential for the network itself and all the applications built on it to operate seamlessly. FLOW is specifically designed to function as both a payment method and a long-term reserve asset within the Flow economy.

Various participants, including validators, developers, and users, utilize the FLOW token to actively engage with the Flow network and earn rewards. Additionally, the token is used for transaction fees and grants participation rights in future protocol governance, allowing stakeholders to have a say in shaping the network's future developments and decision-making processes.

Flow Team Background

Flow is a blockchain platform created by Dapper Labs, the company responsible for the popular CryptoKitties game.

Dapper Labs, led by its founders Roham Gharegozlou, Dieter Shirley, and Mikhael Naayem, designed Flow as a platform specifically tailored for blockchain games and digital collectibles.

Originally known as Axiom Zen, Dapper Labs introduced Flow in 2019 following an announcement that they had secured $11 million in funding, with major investor A16z leading the way. In a subsequent funding round, Dapper Labs received additional investment from NBA stars Andre Iguodala and Spencer Dinwiddie. The funds from this round are earmarked for the development of blockchain games on the Flow platform.

Flow Project Development

The Flow network is receiving a significant upgrade to improve its Byzantine Fault Tolerance (BFT) capabilities and introduce new features. Non-consensus nodes in the network, such as access, execution, collection, verification, and observers, have been enhanced to improve their resilience and performance.

Additionally, the network is introducing the Cadence Compact Format (CCF), a more efficient and deterministic data encoding format for exchanging Cadence external values. This format addresses the shortcomings of the current JSON-Cadence Data Interchange Format, providing more compact messages with reduced network payload size. The CCF codec is faster and uses less memory, further improving data exchange efficiency.

The upgrade also includes the beta implementation of the event streaming API, offering a push-based streaming model for dApps to consume execution data. Furthermore, updates have been made to support parallel transaction execution, enabling the execution node to process multiple transactions simultaneously.

The Flow network has adopted a new upgrade schedule, resulting in less network downtime and more frequent feature releases and bug fixes. These upgrades aim to enhance the security, performance, and developer experience on the Flow network, facilitating mainstream adoption of Web3 technologies.
