What is BarnBridge?

BarnBridge v2 is an open-source, decentralized protocol designed to revolutionize the fixed-income segment within decentralized finance (DeFi). This protocol enables users to earn a fixed return on their deposits by swapping variable Annual Percentage Yields (APYs) from money markets for a fixed APY. As the DeFi landscape evolves rapidly, BarnBridge v2 emerges as a significant upgrade, building on the lessons learned from its predecessor, SMART Yield v1.

BarnBridge v2 operates through various phases, including Deposit, Withdrawal, and Epoch Running. Each phase serves a distinct purpose in the protocol's functioning, ensuring flexibility and responsiveness to user needs. The protocol also introduces ERC-20 pool tokens, representing users' share of the active pool, which can be freely traded on secondary markets.

BOND Token and Governance

The governance token, $BOND, plays a pivotal role in BarnBridge v2. Users can stake $BOND to acquire voting rights in the DAO, actively influencing the protocol's development and resource allocation. With a total token supply capped at 10 million, $BOND adheres to Ethereum's ERC-20 standard, ensuring fungibility and compatibility with various wallets.

Staking Mechanism

Participation in BarnBridge governance requires users to stake $BOND and receive xBOND in return. Team Background

Troy Murray and Tyler Ward are the co-founders of BarnBridge.

Troy Murray, prior to his involvement with BarnBridge, established the crypto Research and Development firm RUDE_labs in 2012. His work there delved into the potential benefits that blockchain technology could offer to the media industry. Additionally, Murray has held positions such as Director of Strategy at Breaker and served as a Supervisor/Technical Architect at snglsDAO Foundation.

Before co-founding BarnBridge, Tyler Ward founded Proof Systems, a digital marketing company with a focus on the fintech sector. Ward's diverse experience includes collaborations with notable entities such as ConsenSys, Earn.com, FOAM, Dether, Grid +, Centrality, Sylo, NEAR Protocol, DARMA Capital, SingularDTV, and snglsDAO. His prior ventures reflect a breadth of expertise in the intersection of technology and finance.

Project Development

On December 22, 2023, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) revealed that BarnBridge DAO, a purported decentralized autonomous organization, and its founders, Tyler Ward and Troy Murray, have agreed to settle charges amounting to over $1.7 million. The charges stemmed from the failure to register BarnBridge’s offer and sale of structured crypto asset securities named SMART Yield bonds.

The SEC also accused the respondents of operating SMART Yield pools as unregistered investment companies. As part of the settlement, BarnBridge will disgorge nearly $1.5 million from the sales, while Ward and Murray will each pay a $125,000 civil penalty. The SEC emphasized that utilizing blockchain technology for unregistered offerings to retail investors contradicts securities laws. The respondents, without admitting guilt, agreed to cease-and-desist orders, preventing violations of the Securities Act of 1933 and the Investment Company Act of 1940.
